Robertson Stephens Weekly Commentary – May 15, 2023

Focus shifts this week to Europe, where data on economic strength in March and early April will provide context for remarks by ECB President Christine Lagarde and ECB board member Isabel Schnabel on Thursday and Friday. In the US, speeches by a wide variety of Federal Reserve officials will also be examined for the Fed’s commitment to pausing rate hikes at the next meeting and/or the extent to which “the pause” might be prolonged. Last week, stocks and bonds were down on the week. Across U.S. Russell style & market cap indices, large-cap growth did the best, and the quality factor led more broadly. In regards to earnings, the companies performed better than research expectations, but the reality suggests we are at the beginning of a modest “earnings recession”. On the wealth planning front, we discuss long term care and how to prepare for it.
